Implant Replacement +/- Capsulectomy
Changing your implants may be indicated if you have encountered a problem or you want to change the size of your implants. In the event that you have had a rupture or leak of your implant, or if the capsule has tightened and become a 'capsular contracture' it may be appropriate to remove the capsule at the same time.
Frequently Asked Questions
1What does surgery involve?
Under a general anaesthetic the old scar will be re-opened and the existing implants removed. If the capsule is being removed this will be done at the same time. In some cases a new ‘pocket’ may be created before the new implants are inserted. If the capsule is removed one drain will be placed on either side.
2How long will I be in hospital?
You will need to stay in hospital overnight to manage discomfort, monitor the drains, and receive antibiotics.
3What type of implant will I have?
This will be decided when you come to clinic. You will be advised which implant size, shape, and texture is most appropriate for your goals.
A note will be made of the type of implants removed and the implants inserted to enter into the Breast and Cosmetic Implant Registry.
4How can I prepare for surgery?
You will need to buy a post-surgical front-fastening bra. You should buy a selection of sizes. You will need to wear the bra day and night for 6 weeks after surgery to reduce fluid build-up. You should stop smoking 6 weeks prior to surgery and follow any advice about your medication.
5What are the risks of surgery?
These will be discussed in the clinic. Please note a specific cup size cannot be guaranteed but you can express a preference. In order to reduce your risk you can make sure you eat healthily, are a healthy weight, and stop smoking.
6What is the post-operative recovery?
Your wounds will usually be healed in 2 weeks. You will need to wear your post-surgical bra day and night for 6 weeks.
7What about breast feeding?
Most patients who have breast implants can still breastfeed. Please be aware some patients cannot breastfeed and if this is important to you then you may wish to consider delaying surgery. Also breastfeeding will change the result of your augmentation.
8What about mammograms?
Mammograms are possible with implants in place. Please tell the person carrying out the mammogram that you have breast implants, and they will take this into account when performing your mammogram.
9How long do implants last?
Breast implants undergo rigorous testing to ensure their safety. Some implants will last a patient’s lifetime without causing problems, others may require revision surgery within years.
